How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are different pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when read more i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions check here similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. 4. ECU
